Toby case study for dominance issues

Toby is a 1 year old Jack Russell. His previous owner was very sad to see him go. He came to us because he has dominance issues and was very noisy. Despite all that he is a lovable happy chappie, Over the next couple of weeks we will be retraining him. Stay posted if you know you can give him a forever home.

STAGE 1

To sort out Toby’s dominance issues I have been asserting myself as pack leader. I have done this by not letting him on our sofas or beds but I have sat in his bed. I have done this because in the wild the pack leader can sleep wherever they want but nobody sleeps in its bed.

I have also made sure all the games we play e.g tug of war are controlled by me.Toby has accepted his role very well and his dominance issue is defiantly getting better.

Another way I have asserted myself as pack leader is by going through doorways first and making him wait. His barking we have sorted out by using a bottle filled with coins, when he barks we shake it to make a loud noise which distracts him. When he’s quiet we praise him loads.

Our next step now is to do the children test and to take him to crowded places.

STAGE 2

Toby’s has settled down now and has become really affectionate. He has passed our children test with flying colors. He has shown no food aggression and will let both my children stroke, take bones and toys off him without complaining.

He loves playing with the children and the other dogs. We have also taken him to childrens parks and walked him in crowds and he’s done really well. Around the home he has become a lot more quiet and only barks when someone comes to the door.

He gets on with most dogs but I feel he likes bigger dogs best. He would be best suited to someone with a young dog as he loves to play. He makes us laugh, the other day he got all the dogs toys and left them in a pile in the garden, he’s got so much character and makes a great companion.
