Tests for our re homers!!

With all our re homers we like to make sure they are completely suitable for new homes and to see what areas they need work in . We do this by assessing them when they start to settle in.

The food aggression test

As most of our dogs are re homed to families it’s important that they are not aggressive when it comes to food, toys and bones. We do this by first myself and my partner taking toys , food and bones off the dogs and seeing if there are any signs of food aggression.

After they have completed this successfully we make sure our children can do the same. If they do not pass then we work on the problem but do not re home to young family’s.

The bin bag test

There is nothing more annoying than coming downstairs in the morning and finding your dog has had a bin bag! Dogs are natural scavengers an if they are hungry they will go through bins.

We like to make sure our re homers don’t have a problem with this by leaving a bin bag in close proximity to them, whilst we are out of the room.

We also leave a few tasty tit bits around like a sandwich on the table to see if they are food stealer’s. If they are then we work on the problem and let you know if they have completed this test or not.

Disturbed while sleeping test

We understand that young children like to poke and prod dogs, also they might accidentally disturb the dog while the dogs sleeping from having two children ourselves. So it’s important that young children can come to no harm. We make sure our re homers do not show aggression in situations such as these.

We ask our children to try this under supervision after we have been able to do it successfully first. We are lucky our children enjoy helping out with the dogs so much!!

The shoe lace test

When I’m out walking our dogs my phone always rings or my shoe lace comes undone. I think its important for our dogs and our re homers to be able to sit and wait patiently while on the lead if you need to do something. So we teach all our dogs to be able to do this.

Basic commands

All our re homers are taught basic commands like sit, stay, down etc. Just like humans, if dogs don’t practise something regularly they forget and dont do things as well. So we encourage all our re homers new owners to take 15 mins each day going through basic commands. We also can supply you with training portfolios and advice guides tailor made to your chosen re homer.
